Automatic feeder
A programmable device that dispenses set portions of food on a schedule, useful for consistent feeding times in small homes.
An automatic feeder is a hopper that stores dry food and releases a pre-set portion at scheduled times through a timer or app, rather than relying on someone being home to serve every meal by hand. In an apartment with an irregular work schedule, it keeps feeding times consistent for a pet even when the owner is running late, which matters most for cats and dogs prone to begging or to gulping food when meals are inconsistent.
Beyond convenience, a portion-controlled feeder helps with weight management, since it removes the guesswork of eyeballing a scoop, and some models split a daily amount into several smaller meals a day, which can also reduce the loud, persistent meowing some cats do around a single big feeding time.
When choosing one, check the hopper capacity against how long you might be away, and look at how the portion size is measured, since some feeders use less precise volume-based scoops while others allow finer gram-based adjustments. A common issue in humid apartments is dry food clumping and jamming the dispenser, so a feeder with a wide-mouth mechanism and a way to check for clogs is worth prioritizing.
