Pressure-mounted gate

A pressure-mounted gate stays in place by wedging tight against the door frame or wall on either side, using spring tension rather than screws or brackets drilled into the wall. That makes it the standard choice in rental apartments, since it can section off a kitchen, keep a puppy away from a balcony door, or block a hallway without leaving holes that need to be patched at move-out.

The tradeoff for that convenience is stability. A pressure gate is not meant for the top of a staircase, since a determined lean or a fall against it can push it loose, and it works only where the walls or frame on both sides are solid enough to grip. Hollow doors or fragile trim can also be damaged by the pressure cups over time if the gate is moved often.

When choosing one, check that the width range on the packaging actually covers the doorway with room to spare, since gates set at their maximum extension are more likely to pop loose. Reinstall and re-tighten it periodically, especially after a big temperature swing that can shrink or expand wood door frames, and consider a wall-mounted hardware kit instead for any opening at the top of stairs.
