Cat-Proofing a Small Apartment

Start with cords and small objects. Dangling charger cables, blind cords, and hair ties are tempting to chew or swallow. Bundle and secure loose cords, tuck them behind furniture, and keep small items in drawers. In a small space these tend to pile up on surfaces, so a quick daily tidy helps.

Secure windows and balcony access. Cats love a good view, but an open window without a sturdy screen is a serious fall risk, especially on upper floors. Check that screens are firmly fixed, and supervise any balcony time. Never rely on a loose or damaged screen to hold a leaning cat.

Check your plants. Some common houseplants can be harmful if a cat chews them, so verify each plant is cat-safe before bringing it home. In a small apartment, plants often sit within jumping distance, so move anything questionable well out of reach or rehome it.

Store cleaners, medications, and foods safely. Cats can open lightweight cabinets and squeeze into tight gaps. Keep chemicals and human medications in closed, secure cabinets. Be mindful of foods left on counters, since a small kitchen gives a cat easy access to tempting hazards.

Mind the appliances and hiding spots. Cats may slip behind the fridge, into a warm dryer, or under a reclining chair. Get in the habit of checking the washer and dryer before use and knowing your cat's favorite hiding places, so you never trap them by accident.

Finally, redirect natural behaviors instead of only blocking them. Provide a scratching post near furniture cats target, and offer safe climbing spots so they choose those over risky ledges. A cat-proofed home protects your cat and saves your belongings at the same time.
